Is it better to do an MBA or a PGDM after completing a BBA program?

Master of Business Administration or MBA is one of the most popular courses in the world and is a highly respected qualification. Millions of students opt for an MBA program every year with the hopes of getting a managerial position after graduating. It is seen as a superior management degree and a coveted qualification. However, not many people know that PGDM diplomas hold the same status. Employers do not differentiate between the two courses and view them as equal. There are many reputed PGDM colleges in Bangalore and other parts of the country, but a lot of people do not know about the course and how it differs from an MBA program.

Let us take a look at some of the key differences between the two management courses-

Qualification

The MBA course is a Master’s degree program. PGDM stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Management and as the name implies, is a diploma program. The diploma is recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Although you may think that a diploma is not as good as a degree, in this case, a PGDM is as good as an MBA.

Duration

The MBA program is usually a two-year course. PGDM programs can be either for one year or two, depending on the B School you have applied to.

Focus and Curriculum

An MBA course is highly technical and focuses a lot on theoretical knowledge. A lot of emphasis is given towards practical skills as well, but perhaps not as much as it is in PGDM programs. PGDM programs focus more on the practical aspects of management and business studies. Both programs will prepare you for managerial positions in the corporate world in various fields, but the syllabus is not exactly the same.

The MBA curriculum is designed and revised by the respective universities. The introduction of changes and the updating of the syllabus is often a lengthy procedure that does not happen as smoothly as you would want it to. Therefore sometimes, the latest industry practices are neglected. PGDM course syllabus is frequently revised every year to accommodate new changes in the business world.

Fees

MBA courses are usually cheaper than PGDM programs but this depends on the B School you have applied to. The fees can range between 5 to 30 lakhs.

Conclusion

All in all, both management courses hold similar status in the corporate world and are respected qualifications. If you get admission to one of the best PGDM Colleges in Bangalore or any other big city, you should not turn it down just because you feel a diploma is not as prestigious as a degree.
